Teresa Van Dongen

Designer

After studying biology, Teresa Van Dongen (b. 1988, lives and works in  Amsterdam) studied at the Design Academy Eindhoven where she began her career as a designer. Weaving together science and design, she works on the elaboration of objects that address scientific problems. She attempts to create new forms of energy by collaborating with biologists and other scientists. Her latest research explore the potential of bacteria to generate light. These lamps require no electricity: Spark of Life (2016) is designed using active electrochemical bacteria while Ambio (2014) produces light with bioluminescent bacteria (photobacterium), found in the ocean. In 20019, she created the lights in the series Electric Life for the exhibition “La Fabrique du Vivant”.
